Solution

Create an online database for people of color to find imagery and information about conditions on skin similar to their own.

Insight

When people of color search for skin care information online, they're often met with results that don't accurately reflect them.

Challenge

Vaseline wants to create a movement around the poor representation of melanin-rich skin in the dermatological conversation.

See My Skin was a simple website project with a big impact. I found their message and goal to be very socially and medically innovative, so for the design and UX of this site, I wanted to make sure it was simple and easy to use. The design integrated Vaseline’s branding with the classic skincare elegance aesthetic without too much visual clutter. Alongside visual mock-ups, I also did quality assurance testing with the developer to make sure the site ran smoothly.

My Role

Reception

Launched to much fanfare, “See My Skin” was an instant hit with thousands of views and user submissions pouring in during the opening days. The project would be honored by three Cannes Lions and numerous Clio awards, but the real testament to the necessity and efficacy of the service lies in it’s continued and dedicated use by the community.

Development

To get the information into the hands of those who needed it, we created an elegantly simple online portal to access a living database. User-submitted imagery would be curated and melded with expert advice and users would be empowered to contact a myriad of board-certified dermatologists—with all this wrapped in an unprecedentedly intuitive interface. This would become the foundation for a thriving community network to get those with skin of color the care they deserve.

Background

In order to combat healthcare inequities and bias affecting those with skin of color, Vaseline, along with partners HUED and VisualDx, sought to face the challenge head-on. With scant image results and dermatological guidance available online for people of color, they wanted to create a resource to help bridge this gap and get these underrepresented and excluded people into the conversation.

See My Skin

A dermatologist-curated online database for people of color to find and share information on and advice for conditions occurring on melanin-rich skin.
